Sunday Early Edition

So last night I took some of the kids out for a sunset/night shoot along the waterfront at Kewalo Basin.
Basically the same place the class went out to during the day.
This was the first time for me going out in the evening with students so I only signed up six, and only four showed up.
Which actually was a good thing since it was easier to keep tabs on them and help them with the cameras.

Now that I think about it, there were some places where I should have tried some High Dynamic Range stuff, but I didn't have too much time to think about my own images.
It seems that no matter how much you talk about things like camera settings in class, the kids just don't get it until they have to use it in practice.
Most of them just set the camera on AUTO and blaze away.
Except when they start to lose light.
Then it's a different story.

Once I reminded them of that stuff it started to literally click into place.

I also shared with them something I recently read about point of view and taking shots standing up.
Basically when you shoot standing, you're taking the same shot everyone else is taking.

This outing made me think more about individualized instruction and how much the kids miss without it.
They may be good with camera phones and point and shoots, but this whole "real" camera thing is totally new to them and it takes some time for them to figure out.
I had a nice time and am looking forwards to our next night shoot.
Maybe the other side of the harbor.
Or maybe Waikiki.
